Biography

Soujow sitting on a stage, playing an acoustic guitar

Soujow is a producer and executive producer based in Casablanca, working across pop, synthpop, trap and electronic. His work starts with a feeling and stays loyal to it, translating emotion and half-formed ideas into sound people can actually hear.

Music found him early. His father bought him his first guitar, and the journey started. He grew up playing Gharnati and Algerian chaabi, listening to tarab, and playing flamenco and blues on guitar and banjo. He doesn’t separate these worlds. His sound is a mix of everything he was introduced to as a child, and it always follows what he feels in the moment.

In 2019 he started producing in Ableton Live. For the first time, the whole universe he heard while playing alone with a guitar could be built, arranged and heard all together. He spent up to fourteen hours at a time exploring and experimenting, like a child discovering the world with no idea where it would lead, and enjoying every second.

He brings that same curiosity to every session. With artists, he sees his role as translation: turning an idea or a feeling into a real sound they can hear, while giving them the freedom to try everything and explore every idea that appears. In his own music he follows the same instinct. He captures the feeling, recognizes the first good version, and stops before over-producing.

His favorite moments in the studio are when something clicks. It might be the bassline that carries a track further, or the small detail that makes the whole listening experience make sense. Everyone in the room says yes at the same time.

He produced PAIN, the first track he made with Mao, and went on to handle the overall production and artistic direction of Mao’s debut EP, SOLAR ECLIPSE. He also works with Naires, one of the first artists he ever collaborated with.
